History of Tennessee

Slavery has been in Tennessee for a very long time. Tennessee got their slaves from Kentucky and Virgina. By 1830, Tennessee had increased their slave rates from 4,000 to 146,158. But by 1860 the number grew even larger, practically doubled! About 25% of Tennessee's population had mostly been slaves. Within the state there was only 7,300 negros.

Surprisingly a lot of the Civil War took place in Tennessee. Franklin County was a town in Tennessee. During the war it wanted to break away from Tennessee and just join Alabama. In 1861 54 percent of Tennessee voted against sending some delegates to a secession convention. The Civil War was whether or not to keep slavery or get rid of it. In the end they did get rid of slavery in America.
